Red Road - Can Never Go Backwards On Your Healing Journey

November 6, 2018

There are often many moments where we feel like we have taken a step backwards. As though we fucked up therapy or healing. That is impossible! Trauma work often feels slow and that things seem to be getting worse before getting better (2 steps back, 1 step forward). Often when we feel like things are getting worse we shame ourselves which make things even harder. It's so important to hold space within your body for the part of you that feels like it has failed. Compassion and self-care is key otherwise the feeling of dropping into a rabbit hole appears.

Often I visualise a car (me) moving forward in terms of the healing journey. Whenever I feel that rabbit hole coming I tell myself that it's okay to pull over and fill the car with petrol. This does not mean I have gone backwards or somehow messed up the healing journey. Even if the car makes a u-turn I will still be moving in a forward direction. Maybe the path never ends? Maybe healing continues for lifetimes? Just know you can never go back when you are addressing your wounds.
